.22 Prone

Lilydale Small Bore Rifle Club has a 6 bay 20m range for .22 prone.

We are normally open from 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday for .22 prone.

The club competes in TRV pennant competitions, and other postal competitions conducted by other clubs, or states. Members may also travel within the state and interstate to compete at other events.

Have a look at the TRA and TRV websites for information on what competitions are coming up.

Prone is the most contested singular event in Australia and would be regarded as the most popular.  Events are shot over a distance of 20 metres or 50 metres.  Most metropolitan clubs have 20m indoor ranges.  50 metre ranges are generally to be found in rural areas.  In local competition men and women usually shoot together.

The men's rifle must not weigh more than 8kg and the women's not more than 6.5kg.

As well as prone, competitive events for .22 rifle are also held for standing and kneeling.  A competition involving all three positions is known as "3P" (3 position).

In international competition, there are separate events for men and women.

The Targets

All small bore shooting uses paper targets, or "cards", with aiming marks which are black circles containing concentric scoring rings.  There is no use of silhouette type aiming marks or any association with game shooting.

The 20m card has 11 aiming marks.  One aiming marks is for sighting, and the remaining 10 are scored at 1 shot per target with a maximum score of 10 per shot, i.e. a maximum possible score of 100 per card.

The 50m card has 5 separate aiming marks, 4 to score and 1 for sighting.  The score is the result of 5 shots each onto the 4 aiming marks (20 shots), with a maximum score of 10 per shot, making a maximum possible score of 200 per card.

The Equipment

Rifles used for small bore target shooting are quite different to those used for other shooting sports.  The .22 rifles are normally single shot bolt action and use target grade rimfire subsonic ammunition.  Peep sights are used with no lens correction or enlargement.  You can, of course, use normal glasses if necessary.  These rifles can cost up to $6000 new, but are available second-hand from around $300.  Anschütz, Feinwerkbau and Walther are three common brands.  Target ammunition starts at around $5.00 for a box of 50.

Accessory equipment normally includes a shooting jacket, shooting glove, rifle sling, shooting mat, spotting telescope and ear muffs or plugs.
