SAFETY

All sports have safety rules or codes designed to minimise the chance of accident or injury - to make the sport as safe as possible.  Small bore target rifle shooting is no exception; in fact safety is paramount.  Of all the sports on the Olympic calendar, our sport has the reputation of being the safest.

There has never been an accident or injury at any of the Target Rifle Victoria ranges!!

First time visitors to our club are given a guided tour and shown what the procedure is before, during and after shooting.  This also covers the important basic rules for conduct whilst at the club - whether or not they intend to shoot.  This includes obeying the instructions of the Range Officer in charge at the time while shooting is in progress.

Some of the more important points of safety are:

  • Treat all firearms as if they are always loaded (even though you are sure they're not!).

  • Never point a firearm at anybody - even if unloaded!!   If nobody pointed a firearm at anyone, no one would ever be shot.

  • Never load the firearm unless you are on the shooting range and not until the Range Officer has given the instruction to do so.  Failure to observe this rule may lead to disqualification.

Following these fundamental rules ensures that there is no possibility of an accident or injury as the result of the discharge of a firearm.

At the Lilydale Club, we endeavour to make these rules become a normal part of the process and are strictly enforced by the Range Officer as part of their duties

These safety requirements form part of the coaching and training.  It is in the interest of all club members to make sure that all safety rules are obeyed.

A breach of safety rules may result in a "friendly" reminder, disqualification or, in repeat or serious cases, disciplinary action may be taken by the club officials.

Shooting and Alcohol / Drugs do not mix. Therefore any person considered, by a club officer, to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, will not be permitted to shoot and may be required to leave the premises.

Detailed Club Safety Procedures are outlined in the Club Code of Safety
